Can Your Google Business Profile Be Suspended for Fake Reviews?

Can Your Google Business Profile Be Suspended for Fake Reviews?

Posted on October 7, 2026

Last month you paid for a shortcut to Buy Google reviews. Today you search your business name, and the reviews are gone. There’s a warning sitting where your star rating used to be.

Yes, Google can penalise your Business Profile for fake reviews. The penalty Google publishes is a restriction, which pauses or hides your reviews and can add a public warning. A full suspension is a separate and heavier penalty for policy violations, and both can be appealed.

We work with Australian businesses at BuyReviews, and owners often use “suspended” for both. They’re different problems with different fixes, so it’s worth knowing which one you have.

Can your Google Business Profile be suspended for fake reviews?

Google’s fake engagement policy says a profile that breaks the rules can be restricted. It lists three examples: no new reviews for a set period, existing reviews unpublished for a set period, and a warning telling customers that fake reviews were removed.

Google also says those examples aren’t the full list. So we wouldn’t tell any owner that a full suspension is off the table, least of all for a profile that keeps breaking the rules.

One report from 2026 backs this up. It showed Google giving a longer restriction to a profile caught a second time, which tells you the penalties grow.

What’s the difference between a restriction and a suspension?

With a restriction, your profile still shows on Google Search and Maps. Customers can find you, call you and get directions. What they can’t do is read your reviews or leave new ones, and they may see the warning.

A suspension goes further. You can lose the ability to manage the profile, or it can stop showing to the public. Google handles suspended and disabled profiles through its own appeals tool.

In our experience, a restriction with a warning does more harm than owners expect. The profile is live, but the first thing people read is that fake reviews were removed.

How do you know if your profile has been penalised?

Google says it emails the business owner before applying a restriction. Start there.

  1. Check the inbox of the Google account that manages your Business Profile, including the spam folder.
  2. Search your business name on Google and look for a warning under your profile.
  3. Select Read reviews and see if your reviews are showing.
  4. Open the Google Business Profile appeals tool while signed in to the same account. It lists your profiles and their status.

If your profile appears in the appeals tool with a policy reason, you’re dealing with a suspension. If it doesn’t, and your reviews are hidden or paused, it’s more likely a restriction.

What should you do before you appeal?

Fix the cause first. An appeal on a profile that still has the problem is likely to fail, and you’ll have used up your first attempt.

Cancel any review package you’re paying for. Then report the fake reviews that are still on your profile: select Read reviews, the three dots next to the review, then Report review. It’s the only proper way to remove fake Google reviews, and it shows you’ve cleaned up.

How do you appeal a suspension or restriction?

The two penalties use different routes. For a restriction over fake reviews, use the appeal link in Google’s email or on its restrictions help page. For a suspended or disabled profile, use the appeals tool.

  1. Gather your evidence first. Official documents work best, such as a business registration or a utility bill, with the business name and address matching your profile.
  2. Open the Google Business Profile appeals tool and select the profile.
  3. Submit the appeal.
  4. Select Add evidence and attach your files. Once the evidence form is open, you have 60 minutes to submit it or it won’t be attached.
  5. Check the status in the appeals tool. Google emails you a decision.

Appeal only if you believe Google got it wrong, or once you’ve fixed what was wrong. If the reviews were bought, be honest with yourself about your chances. We think one well-prepared appeal is worth more than several rushed ones.

Can a competitor get your profile penalised?

Owners worry about this, and it’s fair. Fake reviews can be aimed at you as well as bought by you.

If strange reviews appear, report each one with Report review and track the reports in Google’s Reviews Management Tool. If someone demands money to take down negative reviews, Google has a separate process for reporting that as extortion.

Keep your own records too. A simple list of who you served and when makes it far easier to show which reviews are real. And for genuine complaints, reply. When you respond to negative Google reviews politely, customers can see you’re a real business dealing with real people.

How do you get more Google reviews without risking your profile?

Reviews from real customers don’t trigger any of this. Here’s the routine we recommend.

  1. On a computer, sign in to the Google account that manages your Business Profile and search your business name.
  2. Select Read reviews, then Get more reviews, then Copy. Google provides this link, so there’s no need for an outside Google review link generator.
  3. Ask each customer on the day their job is finished.
  4. Send the link by text, or use a short review request email template with a thank you and one line asking for an honest review.
  5. Don’t offer a discount or gift. Google treats that as fake engagement too.
  6. Reply to every review within a day or two.

That’s the service we provide at BuyReviews. You share your customer list, we handle the asking and the reminders, and your customers write their own words. It’s how we help owners get Google reviews and improve Google reviews without putting the profile at risk. For Google reviews, Australia has consumer law on top of Google’s rules, so we treat online reputation management in Australia as a compliance job as much as a marketing one.

Frequently asked questions

Can Google suspend a Business Profile for fake reviews?

Google can penalise a profile for fake reviews. Its published penalties are restrictions: no new reviews for a set period, existing reviews hidden, and a public warning. Google says that list isn’t complete. A full suspension is a separate, heavier penalty for policy violations, and both kinds of penalty can be appealed.

How long does a Google Business Profile appeal take?

There’s no guaranteed time. Google reviews the appeal and emails you a decision, and you can check the status in the appeals tool. One local SEO agency reports decisions within about five business days. Have your evidence ready before you start, because the evidence form must be submitted within 60 minutes of opening it.

What evidence helps a Business Profile appeal?

Use official documents that prove the business is real and operates where the profile says, such as a business registration or a utility bill. Google’s tip is to check that the business name and address on each document match the profile. Photos of the shopfront alone usually aren’t treated as proof.

Will my reviews come back after a restriction?

Real reviews should. Google describes the restriction as unpublishing existing reviews for a set period, so they’re hidden, not deleted. The fake reviews Google removed won’t return. New reviews may be paused during that time, so use it to set up a proper process for asking customers.

What if a competitor posts fake reviews on my profile?

Report each one from your Business Profile using Read reviews, the three dots, then Report review, and track it in the Reviews Management Tool. If someone demands money to remove negative reviews, Google has a separate process for reporting extortion. Keep records of your real customers so you can show who you’ve served.

What should you do next?

Check your email and your profile today, so you know where you stand. If there’s a penalty, fix the cause before you appeal.

After that, start asking real customers. Send BuyReviews your customer list and we’ll help you get Google reviews that won’t put your profile at risk.
